Day 1 October 30 Arrival in Mexico City
You’ll be welcomed at the airport and taken to your hotel. Settle in then start exploring the city, where preparations for the Day of the Dead celebrations are underway.
Day 2 October 31 Zocalo and Xochimilco
Take a guided tour of this exciting city, starting with the Zocalo, its historic heart. Here’s where you’ll find the Metropolitan Cathedral, along with the National Palace, home to the famous murals of Diego Rivera. The Zocalo will be decorated with huge skulls and offerings in the run-up to the Day of the Dead festivities.
Later on, visit picturesque Xochimilco, a colourful quarter characterised by canals, floating gardens and brightly decorated boats called ‘trajineras’. Here you’ll watch a dramatic performance of ‘The Legend of La Llorona’, a weeping woman from a tragic local tale. The telling of the legend is popular during the Day of the Dead, when local people celebrate those who have died and souls who might return to seek out their loved ones.
Day 3 November 1 Teotihuacán and the Shrine of Guadalupe
Time to discover Teotihuacán, an ancient ruined city, where you can climb the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, wander the Avenue of the Dead and visit the various temples. On the way back to your hotel, stop off at the Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a place of pilgrimage for millions of Catholics around the world.
Day 4 November 2 Day of the Dead in San Andrés Mixquic
Today Mexico celebrates the Day of the Dead, where families come together to honour the deceased. One of the best places to join in is San Andrés Mixquic in the southeast of Mexico City. Here you’ll experience all the sights and sounds of the Day of the Dead rituals, including the decorating of tombs with colourful objects and flowers, and the lighting of thousands of candles for the spirits of loved ones.
Day 5 November 3 End of festivities
Time to catch your return flight or explore this beautiful country further.
