Day 1 Arrive in Hanoi
Your guide will welcome you to Vietnam’s capital city, Hanoi, and you’ll be taken to your hotel for an overnight stay in the city.
Day 2 Cycling in Duong Lam and Hanoi tour
Head out to the centuries-old village of Duong Lam for a cycling tour of its timeworn alleyways, ancient houses, pagodas and temples. Return to Hanoi at midday for a guided tour of the city’s main highlights including Ho Chi Minh’s house and mausoleum and the sacred One Pillar Pagoda. You’ll also have the chance to learn about Vietnamese culture and history from local arts scholar Duo Duc at the Temple of Literature, and take a stroll through the atmospheric old quarter to scenic Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple.
Climb the sky-scraping Lotte Tower in the early evening for a panoramic view of the city, where there’s also the option for dinner at rooftop restaurant Top of Hanoi before retiring back to your hotel.
Day 3 Hanoi and hill tribe settlements of Sapa
Visit Hanoi’s Fine Arts Museum and Museum of Women before driving to the northern hills of Sapa to hike through verdant rice terraces and discover the villages of Vietnam’s vibrant hill tribes. Stay overnight at a local hotel.
Day 4 Guided trek around Sapa
Take a guided hike through the dramatic green terraced hills and misty mountains of Sapa to a series of fascinating hill tribe villages to interact with locals and enjoy stirring views of the valleys and paddy terraces. Spend the night at a hotel in Sapa.
Day 5 Ethnic markets of Sapa and back to Hanoi
Explore an ethnic market where members of different hill tribes in colourful traditional dress sell handicrafts and other local products. Walk to a nearby settlement to learn about community life before driving back to Hanoi to stop over at a hotel.
Day 6 Overnight cruise on Halong Bay
Leave Hanoi for the peaceful green paddy fields of rural Vietnam on the drive to sublimely beautiful Halong Bay. Board a traditional Vietnamese sailing boat for an overnight cruise of this UNESCO World Heritage site, visiting Soi Sin Beach and Coconut Tree Island. Explore the curious Cua Van Floating Village by kayak before cruising around the bay’s caves and grottoes. Enjoy spa treatments or local cookery classes on board, as well as dinner and the chance to try on traditional Bao Dai dresses. Stay overnight in the boat’s comfy cabins.
Day 7 Halong Bay and fly to Hoi An
Take a relaxing morning Tai Chi class on the boat’s deck before exploring one of Halong Bay’s biggest caves. Then it’s time to disembark and drive to Ha Noi airport for a short flight to Danang and a transfer to your hotel in Hoi An.
Day 8 Tour of Hoi An and My Son
Start the day with a trip to the heart of the ancient Champa kingdom at My Son, with thousand-year-old sanctuaries and towers situated in a lush green valley. In the afternoon, you’ll be taken on a walking tour of Hoi An’s old town with its old tile-roofed workshops, shady pagodas and colourful communal halls. Sleep overnight at a Hoi An hotel.
Day 9 Across the Hai Van Pass to Hue
Head from Hoi An to Hue via the spectacular Hai Van Pass, stopping for photo ops along the way. Once in Hue take a tour of the city’s Imperial Citadel, visit the ancient Thien Mu Pagoda in a pine forest above the Perfume River and end the day with a serene voyage along the river. Stay the night in a hotel in Hue.
Day 10 Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park and farm stay
Travel from Hue to the tropical ravines and caves of Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park. On the way, stop off to explore the extensive underground tunnel systems of Vinh Moc, constructed during the Vietnam War, and the Hien Luong Bridge that marks the country’s reunification at the end of the war. Freshen up at your Chay Lap farmstay on the edge of the national park before exploring its natural treasures. Go cycling along Ho Chi Minh Trails to experience the area’s serene scenery and see the turquoise waters of Mooc Stream before retiring back to the farm for the night.
Day 11 Tan Hoa village and outdoor adventure
Head over Da Deo Mountain Pass to reach the ethnic minority village of Tan Hoa, which is the base for an outdoor adventure exploring the area’s spectacular landscape. Follow your guide through peanut and buffalo fields to explore cavernous caves and underground rivers, swim in cascading pools and trek up verdant mountainsides. Return to your Chay Lap farmstay at the end of the day.
Day 12 Fly to Ho Chi Minh for a city tour
Drive from Chay Lap to Danang airport for a flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Spend the rest of the day exploring the dynamic city that once served as the capital of South Vietnam. Visit the former Presidential Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and walk to the old Central Post Office. Your guide will also take you to the old central quarter with its French colonial buildings such as the Opera House and Hotel de Ville, before transferring you back to your city hotel.
Day 13 Cao Dai Temple and Cu Chi Tunnels
Learn more about the Vietnam War with a trip to the War Remnants Museum, which tells the story from a local perspective, before travelling to the famous Cu Chi underground tunnel systems that served as a subterranean base for Vietnamese soldiers during the war. There’s also the chance to meet and talk with a Viet Cong war veteran before returning to your hotel in Ho Chi Minh City for the evening. The day also includes a stop to see the colourful midday mass at the largest temple of the Vietnamese Co Dai sect.
Day 14 Morning market and Mekong Delta
Visit the bustling early morning market in Ho Chi Minh City. Take a tour to Thien Hau temple and China Town’s Medicine Road. Stop to see a Cao Dai Temple and then drive to Ben Tre in the Mekong Delta, famous for its coconut production and quiet, peaceful waterways. Ride a moped through local villages and lush fields before gliding along the canals on a boat, pausing at a fishery, fruit orchards and a rice noodle factory. Go for a bicycle ride along village roads for lunch at a local waterside restaurant and take a cruise back to Ben Tre where you’ll be whisked back to Ho Chi Minh City. In the evening, attend a spectacular show at the historic Opera House and then head back to your hotel for your last overnight stay in the city.
Day 15 Time for your flight home
You’ll be picked up from your hotel after breakfast and taken to Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat airport for your flight back home.
